Operating Guide
The Hush-A-Com Operates on a standard inexpensive 9-Volt Transistor bettery. With average flying, this battery will last several months. Should you notice a "motor-boating" type of oscillation or the intercom becoming garbled, this is an indication the battery is about ready for replacement. We recommend replacing it with an alkaline battery. It is easily done by removing the end screw that holds the clip onto the amplifier box and lifting off the cover. It is desirable to carry a spare battery in the aircraft. Outdated elt batteries work well with our accessory power cord.
The Hush-A-Com has been designed to be trouble-free. However, a note of caution; don't forget to turn off the unit when leaving your aircraft. Good procedure would be to always turn off the Hush-A-Com before removing the headsets.
If you have an audio panel, it should be switched from speaker to phone. The Hush-A-Com volume should first be set to the most comfortable level, then adjust the aircraft radio volume. Be sure all plugs are pushed completely into their respective jacks.
These units are equipped with high-quality noise-canceling electret microphones. Being extremely noise-canceling, they must be used so that the person's lips are practically touching the microphone. If not used in this manner, the volume on the amplifier must be turned too high, which in turn will amplify outside noise and hinder proper operation.
A convenient clip has been provided so that the Hush-A-Com can be slipped onto the pocket at the rear of the pilot's seat. We Strongly recommend mounting the Hush-A-Com in this manner, as all the wires remain over the shoulder and out of the way, and permit easy exiting from the aircraft. When the headsets are removed, you simply lay them on the rear seat.
Our push to talk is unique in that we have elastic sewn into our Velcro strap, so that be stretching the velcro before you wrap the strap around the yoke, the button will never twist.
We recommend that the patch cord wires from the AMP box be routed along the floor on the left side of the cabin, or in a manner so as not to be cut when sliding the front seats up and back. When there is no door on the pilot's side, place the wires in between the armrest.
The headsets have been designed for your comfort by providing several different adjustments:
In the winter, the use of any boom microphone that is extremely cold will sometimes result in the loss of volume and poor quality of sound, due to moisture from one's breath condensing on the cold microphone diaphragm.
Hush-A-Com Intercom Instructions
The patch cord affixed to the AMP Box marked "Aud" plugs into the aircraft headphone jack.
The patch cord with the push to talk button goes to the microphone jack in the aircraft, and the small plug on the other end goes into the jack marked "mic" in the AMP box.
If your aricraft is equipped with a push-to-talk built into the yoke, it will work with the Hush-A-Com. You can use our button on the right yoke. In either instance, you must connect the cord from the AMP Box "mic" jack to the aircraft microphone jack. Click on the following to open wiring diagrams:
Should you notice a loud feedback in your headphones when transmitting, this indicates your radio is designed with side-tone (hearing your own voice). In most instances, the radio can be removed from its mounting tray without disconnecting it. Turn the "side-tone" screw on the under side of the set completely counterclockwise to eliminate the problem. A temporary correction of this situation would be not to use the "Aud" cord, but to merely turn up the aircraft speaker.
Note: The bleed-amp adjustment is a silver trimpot about the size of a dime and sits on three legs. It is adjusted for standard aircraft radios. Should your radio transmission be weak, but clear, readjust the trimpot, as seen from the short side of the P.C. board, counterclockwise, for more gain into the radio. This adjustment has no effect on the intercom. When using with a hand-held radio (which requires less wattage), you should turn the trimpot so that the detent is appoximately facing the 3 o'clock position, for less gain.
